Landed and what to do next?

In-spite of ALL the prep work we have done back home, we still feel lacking :(. May be because we were so confused about the settlement organizations and their network here. Out of our own experience, we suggest the below to any newcomer in Ontario here. is a one stop shop for info for newcomers to Ontario. As soon as you arrive, find your nearest Newcomer information center or a center for education and training. Either of the above centers will help you apply for a SIN card, OHIP, housing, employment, bank accounts etc., They can help with finding employment, bridging courses, CO-OP programs, prepare resumes, cover letters, you name it, they help you with it. The best part is, they do not stop their services until we get a job :). They offer free local phones, internet, faxing, printing, photocopying etc.,. They offer free in-house child minding services for our kids, while we use their services at their centers. This might not sound that important, but believe me, as a newcomer you will want to spend at-least half a day everyday until you feel kinda settled :). What more can a newcomer ask for?

Dear Madam plzzzzzz reply in my case i posted my details in blog-decision worry is increasing day by day. Thanks a lot in advance for your kind support.

    1. Hello vpzala,

I do not think there is much to say again, as what I said is a fact. It takes anywhere from 15 days to 6 months after the NDVO receives the passports and en-cashes the RPRF and so NO ONE can predict which day your passports will be returned with visas. I do not see a reason to worry at all. I would appreciate if you stick to one comment per query.

I understand your anxiety, ALL of us go through the same thing and believe me one day you will say the same advice to others :).

hi Indira, This is a very helpful blog and thanks for all the efforts behind this and willingness to share. Good luck in settling down in canada.

Can you pl share Medical test experience in Chennai(?). My app is transferred to NDVO. Waiting to hear from them.

    1. Thanks Vinod, As with the medicals, we had to call the DMP(the list will be provided to you by NDVO with medical requests) and fix an appointment. The whole process takes about 2 hours, very simple tests like X-Ray, blood tests etc., Ensure you ask the DMP of what exactly he/she needs to complete the medicals. Usually they ask for passports, medical forms, hard and soft copy photographs etc.,

      Good luck to you,

      Indira Prabhakaran.

    Indira Jee,

I am from Nepal and my Visa office is New Delhi. I had applied on March 2011. Now my e-cas status has been showing ” A decision has been made on your application. The office will contact you concerning this decision.” since Jan 23. I had sent Medical+ RPRF and Passports on 28 Dec 2011 upon request. My status was changed into ” Medical reports has been received” two days earlier of “Decision Made”. But It is very shocking to know from bank that RPRF has not been cashed yet. I had sent them an A/C payee bank draft. Now I am worried why they have not cashed RPRF.

Please share your expertise. Is it normal or any bad sign for me?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Sometimes banks are not efficient enough for timely accurate info. I hope all is well and you will receive passports soon.

    Hi Indira Jee,

Thanks for immediate reply. Some more questions, please. Should I take Proof of Fund , in my case CND 17011, while landing in Canada?. As there is already “Decision Made” status, can I withdraw money form bank for other use? How many days do they take to return passports after they make decision?

    1. Yes, you HAVE to carry the POF, else you cannot land and become a PR of Canada. I suggest NOT to withdraw any money before you have passports with visas in hand. Average 2 weeks.

Thank you for your suggestion. I had withdrawn some amount of money, BUT now I am going to deposit it back. One question- While I sent POF( with initial application) the value of CND1 was Rs 73 and I had deposited 73*17011 amount in bank ( we cannot deposit foreign currency in our banks). But now the value of dollar is hiked to 79 Nepalese Rupees. In this condition should I deposit extra amount to meet the required 17011 or the earlier amount will work while they interrogate in bank?
One more info. The bank had told me that they have cashed the draft of RPRF.

    1. If RPRF has been encashed, you can relax :). But put the money back just in case.. It’s not worth the risk at this stage.

    Hi Indra,

I would like to know from your experience and others information’s, I am Indian working in Malaysia and also applied through Kualalumpur high commission during July and i got a reply from CIC on October 1st week. how long does it take to get a result after we submit our medicals. I send mine and my wife’s medical reports by end of January. How long would you think it would take for them to make a decision in my case.
How much money should i carry while landing,i want to prepare so if u could let me know it would be helpful.

    1. Latest POF amounts can be found in CIC’s website. Unsure of Kaulalampur’s timelines..

    Hi Ms. Indra,

I want to ask a question if i am due for a child after i receive a Visa and before i leave to canada. Can you enlighten me on would be my status.
Do i need to process a new application and wait for the whole process or just show that i just had a baby and would they provide my baby a visa in a short time.
Do you have any information in such a scenario what happens?

    1. Contact VO asap and tell them you are expecting a baby. Once your baby is born, they’ll send you forms and you have to get them done. So ALL of you can fly together as PRs :).
